Equinix has announced that it will open a new data centre in Silicon Valley, this will be its fourteenth in the region. The $142m SV11 facility will be located on the Great Oaks campus in San Jose and is due to open on 30th June 2021.
The initial phase will offer 61,000 sq ft (5,667 sq m) of colocation space initially accommodating 1,450 racks. Once fully built out there will be capacity for 2,950 cabinets.
Equinix is implementing a new renewable energy strategy. The company is aiming for SV11 to have an ultra-low average annual PUE of 1.17. The Great Oaks facility will see the expansion of the use of Bloom Energy fuel cells, with 20MW of capacity for the whole campus. This is the first time that the natural gas-powered cells will be used as the primary generator with traditional utility electrical grid and generators as backup power sources.
