2020 was a pivotal year for digital infrastructure; and data centre deployments already set to rise after a slower 2019, accelerated. Meanwhile, the shift from enterprise owned infrastructure to cloud services continued.
DC Byte found that hyperscale deployments will happen in seven countries across Europe in 2021 – a record number of markets for a single year. This includes new developments in Spain as well as additional ones in Finland and Sweden, both of which have gone several years with limited activity.
The leading hyperscalers are adding new cloud regions across regions outside of the traditional core markets. This trend is expected to continue beyond 2021 with multiple new zones announced.
Currently there is over 300MW of IT capacity under speculative construction by colocation providers in EMEA.
Data centre real estate investment trusts (REITs) issued five times more debt in 2020 than in 2019; whilst Euro denominated debt tripled). In comparison cell tower REITS did not have a similar increase but have held steady over the same period.
