Overview

Founded in 1939, Smals vzw provides essential IT and digital infrastructure services for public institutions with budget constraints. Acting as a cost-sharing association, Smals supports government institutions in the social and health sectors to promote integrated ICT services, generating scale effects and synergies.

A major focus is on enabling members to develop and manage information systems, addressing the challenge of attracting IT specialists in the public sector. More than half of Smals' workforce is dedicated to this purpose, with staff members deployed to institutions and functionally managed by them.

Recognizing the evolving challenges in IT, particularly data centers, Smals has expanded into specialised data center management. This ensures optimal IT service levels, quick infrastructure adaptation, cost control, ecological sustainability, and compliance with privacy legislation, benefiting both Smals and its members with cost-effective solutions aligned with market prices. Smals plays a crucial role in supporting public institutions with limited financial resources to navigate the complex IT landscape and meet evolving regulatory standards.
