Overview

Switch Datacenters, not to be confused with the US company Switch, started life in 2007 as Sennax Group BV. The company started as a web hosting business in 2007 before moving into colocation at the end of 2010.

The company expanded initially through development of its AMS1 facility in Amsterdam's South-East business district before partnering with Plain Vanilla Investments around 2013 to scale its business. The fruits of this investment was seen in 2014 with AMS2, when Switch acquired a former ABN Amro data centre in Woerden, south of Amsterdam, which also added IBM (who had managed ABN's IT infrastructure since 2005) into their customer portfolio.

In 2017, Switch Datacenters acted as shell developer for Datacenter.com in a site close to their AMS1 facility. The site is branded as Datacenter.com but within Switch is known as AMS3. The following year, Switch announced plans to develop its fourth facility, AMS4, which would be its largest data centre to date. The property is adjacent to AMS1.

Less than one year later, the company announced that it was to sell AMS1 to Equinix for €30 million (US$34 million) in an all-cash deal. The property is now known by the Equinix IBX name AM11.

Current projects include the completion of the first phase of AMS4, which is slated for Q4 2021, and the continued development of a new hyperscale-ready facility with a hitherto unconfirmed completion date.
