Overview

VIRTUS is a privately owned, UK-based wholesale data centre operator. It was founded in 2009 as a joint venture between Frogmore Real Estate Partners and Obsidian Capital. In 2011 Brockton Capital acquired an interest in the company in the same year as its first facility, London 1 Enfield, was opened, with a commitment for up to £100 million of investment. In 2014, VIRTUS secured a further £50 million from Deutsche Bank.

In 2017, Brockton sold its stake in the company to its present-day owners, ST Telemedia (STT). STT is a subsidiary of the Singaporean sovereign wealth fund Temasek.

Since becoming part of STT, VIRTUS has undergone an astonishing rate of growth and, in the space of less than 10 years, has gone from start-up to the second largest data centre operator in the UK by live power after Equinix.

In August 2022, STT reached an agreement for Macquarie Asset Management, via Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 7, to acquire a significant minority in VIRTUS.
