Microsoft receives planning approval for Illinois data centre

Microsoft has received planning consent for a new $200 million hyperscale data centre in Hoffman Estates Village, near Chicago, Illinois.

The consent, which received unanimous approval at the planning meeting, is for a 21-hectare (53 acre) campus which will be developed in two phases – phase one, which will comprise site works and buildings totalling 23,000 sq m (250,000 sq ft), and phase two, which will add a further 14,000 sq m (150,000 sq ft) of space and an electrical substation. The first phase is scheduled for completion in mid 2022.
