Overview

Johor is a spillover market that emerged at the peak of the Singapore moratorium on data centre. The city is favoured for its strategic proximity to Singapore, availability of land and power, and rising green energy potential. Leveraging on the available resources, the Malaysian authorities have been actively promoting Malaysia as the upcoming regional data centre hub and instituted channels to support foreign operators on their market entry such as the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

Johor has evolved uniquely as a build-to-suit market serving regional tech companies such as ByteDance and SEA Group. The pipeline capacity planned within the city exceeds Kuala Lumpur, which displays the dynamism of the market as operators and businesses decentralise their digital infrastructure and consider locations beyond Singapore.
